The necklace pendant is designed with inspiration from the medieval cross. Back then, wearing a cross as jewelry around the neck was often associated with long and dangerous pilgrimages. It was therefore important that the cross could withstand the rigors of travel. Therefore, the crosses were designed with short and wide arms, as opposed to the slender crosses used later.
